While much of this feels basic to some, you don’t know what you don’t know. I thought I'd start with the basics since the internet is littered with bad advice.
Punctuality Pays Off: Arrive early! This demonstrates respect for the interviewer's time and allows you to collect yourself before the interview. I recommend 10 to 15 minutes for an in-person interview and 5 for a virtual interview.
First Impressions Matter: Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake, make eye contact, and smile. If virtual, ensure you are looking into the camera so it appears you are looking directly at your interviewer.
Active Listening: Pay close attention to the questions and respond thoughtfully. Don't be afraid to ask clarifying questions if needed. Taking notes can help, but if interviewing virtually, ask permission first. That ensures they know what you are doing and don’t think you are looking down and checking your phone.
Enthusiasm is Contagious: Express your passion for the role and the company. Your enthusiasm can set you apart from candidates interested in “a” job.
Prepare Questions Too: Having insightful questions prepared demonstrates your curiosity and initiative. Ask thoughtful questions about the role, the team, and the company culture. Focus on what matters to you. Sincerity is obvious, so if you don’t know what answer you are looking for, don’t ask.
By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to interview success. Remember, confidence and preparation are key. Good luck!
