Preparing for an Interview
Landing that dream job interview is exciting but can also be nerve-wracking. However, with some preparation, you can enter the room feeling confident and ready to impress.
Research is Key:
Know the Organization: Before interviewing, search the company's website, social media pages, and news articles. Understand its mission, values, and current projects. This demonstrates an interest in the organization and allows you to focus on what they care about most.
Role Review: Read through the job description line by line. Identify the key skills and experiences they seek. Prepare examples from your past that highlight how you possess these qualities. You should be able to talk about every requirement on the posting.
Practice Makes Perfect:
Prepare for Common Questions: Research common interview questions and craft answers that showcase your skills and experiences using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Consider hiring a professional to help hone those answers.
Mock Interview: Practice your responses with a friend or family member or in front of a mirror. Record yourself and review to continue to refine those answers.
Dress for Success:
Professional Polish: Dress professionally for the interview environment. When in doubt, err on the side of formality. Your attire should convey confidence and respect for the opportunity. Don’t fall for the advice “dress for the job.” You are making a first impression, so make a good one. Dress at least one step up. While no longer necessary in most industries, a suit is never a bad choice.
Know your Non-Negotiables
We spend a lot of time at work, so finding a role that aligns with your values and needs is crucial. This is where identifying your non-negotiables comes in. These are the essential aspects of a job you require to feel fulfilled and successful. Knowing our non-negotiables empowers us to prioritize what matters most and ask the questions that will.
Preparing for your interview will help alleviate some of the stress of the process and help you stand out as a candidate.
