How much time should I spend on my search each day?
Job searching is not a full-time job. These are holdover beliefs from a very different time. Focus on spending quality time on your job search every day instead of focusing on spending a large quantity of time. Set realistic daily goals based on other obligations you have. And always take breaks. Consistency is important. I tell my clients to spend 30 minutes to an hour five days a week. While this will vary based on other obligations, it is a manageable number that everyone can stick to.
10 min on LinkedIn
Reach out to 1 network contact each day
No more than 30 min searching the boards
Write a cover letter & apply to jobs of interest
Take a workshop or read a book or blog
Do something for yourself
Regularly step back and assess what is working and what isn’t. Adjust accordingly. Parkinson’s Law says that work expands to fill to time available. Limit what is available.
Striking a balance between persistence and self-care is essential. You can navigate your job search effectively without feeling overwhelmed by setting realistic goals, incorporating skill development, networking strategically, and maintaining consistency. Finding the right opportunity is a journey, and each step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goal.
